This book was given to me with the enticement of its being “the first spy novel.” This may be true, but just as the first submarine was clunky and didn’t submerge much, The Riddle of the Sands is heavy, outmoded and pretty much no fun to read. There is an admirable sense of atmosphere in the book, but hardly ever a sense of suspense. Found this to be a slow read indeed, had a "boys own adventure" feel to it.
